Lee, a student at Newbattle Abbey College

Lee Ryan, currently studying Access to Higher Education

We recently caught up with Lee, who is currently studying our Access to HE: SWAP course and asked her to share her story.

What course did you study at Newbattle Abbey College?

I have studied the NC Rural Skills course in 2022-23 and currently Access to Higher Education: Swap 2023-24 course.

Why did you choose to study at Newbattle Abbey College?

After participating in the Prescribe Nature course, it helped me gain knowledge towards the outdoors, nature, and inner wellbeing. I was involved in helping create a new adult wellbeing programme and what I learnt I could pass onto any participants.

The course helped me realise that I could be proud of who I was.
I was introduced to the Rural Skills course 2022/23 group, which sounded great and although I was anxious about what to expect and if I would even be able to get through the full academic year, I applied. I was accepted.

I then learnt more about the other courses available to me and decided to apply for the Access to Higher Education: Swap course for 2023/24. I again found out a lot about this course that was interesting to me and so applied, again I was lucky enough to be accepted.

I can honestly say that without attending the Prescribe Nature course I would have missed one of the best opportunities in my life.

In three words how would you describe Newbattle Abbey College?

Life changing experience.

What have you enjoyed the most about your time here?

Being at NAC has given me the opportunity to help me feel like I am capable, and I do matter. As well as helping me find ‘me’ again through the support, sense of community, and environment that I have had the privilege to be a part off whilst studying here.

What are your plans after leaving Newbattle Abbey College?

I plan to return to NAC for the HNC Associate Degree 2024/25, after that I will move onto university to finish my degree. Something I never thought I would ever be capable of doing if asked 3 or 4 years ago. I will genuinely be sad when the time for my journey with NAC ends, but eternally grateful for all that I have gained by being a NAC student.
